Funnels

See how many visitors complete each step, and where they leave.

A funnel shows how many visitors do a set of steps in order, and where they stop. For example: visit the home page, then the pricing page, then sign up.

Make a funnel

  1. Open Goals in the sidebar, then the Funnels tab. Click Add funnel.
  2. Funnel name: for example Sign-up funnel.
  3. For each step, choose Visits a page and type a path, or Fires an event and type an event name.
  4. Click Add a step for more steps. A funnel has 2 to 8 steps.
  5. Save the funnel.

End a page path with * to match all pages that start with it, for example /blog/*. Each website can have up to 20 funnels.

Unlike goals, funnels read your past data. A new funnel shows results at once for the selected date range.

Read a funnel

  • Entered: visitors who did step 1.
  • Each step: how many visitors reached it, and how many stopped before it.
  • Completed and Conversion rate: visitors who did every step, and their share of the visitors who entered.
  • Median time: the typical time between two steps.
  • Revenue after completing: when revenue is connected and matched to visitors.

How steps are counted

  • A visitor reaches a step when they do it after the step before it. Other pages and events between two steps do not matter.
  • All steps must happen in the selected date range.
  • The visitor code changes every day, so a funnel counts the steps that one visitor does on the same day.
  • Funnels have no Real-time option. Use Export CSV to download the numbers.
