Goals

Count visits to a page or an event as a conversion, and see who converts.

A goal counts an action that matters to you, for example a visit to your "thank you" page or a sign-up event. Each time it happens, it is a conversion.

Add a goal

  1. Open Goals in the sidebar. On the Goals tab, click Add goal.
  2. Goal name: type a name, for example Signup.
  3. Counts when: choose one:
    • A specific page is visited. Type the page path only, for example /signup/thank-you.
    • A custom event occurs. Type the event name exactly as you send it with analytics.track().
  4. Save the goal.

A goal counts only visits and events that arrive after you add it. It does not count older data.

Matching rules

  • A page goal matches the exact path. /thank-you does not match /thank-you/ or /en/thank-you.
  • An event goal matches the exact event name.
  • For a group of pages or for steps in order, use a funnel.

Read the Goals report

  • Completions: every time the goal happened.
  • Conversions: the number of visitors who completed the goal.
  • Conv. rate: conversions divided by all unique visitors in the period.
  • Value: the total of the value property of the events, for event goals. For example, analytics.track('purchase', { value: 49 }) adds 49.

The page of one goal

Click a goal to open its page. It shows:

  • The completions over time.
  • Who converts: the top 10 sources, countries, devices, and landing pages of the visitors who completed the goal. Each row has the conversions (visitors) and the completions. The values come from the visit in which the goal happened, for example the referrer of that visit.
  • Event properties (event goals only): the values of the properties that you send with the event, for example analytics.track('signup', { plan: 'pro' }) shows how many signups had each plan.

The report filters apply to this page too.

Change a goal

Click Edit beside a goal. You can change these settings at any time, with no change to your website's code:

  • Goal name: the new name shows in all reports, also for older completions.
  • Icon: one or two emoji or symbols, for example 🚀. The icon shows before the name.
  • Hide this goal from the Goals table: the goal moves to the Hidden goals list under the table. Dodolytics still counts it. It still counts in the Conversions tile and in alerts, and you can still choose it as your #1 KPI. The CSV export has all goals, with a Hidden column.

If you change the page path or the event name, the goal counts the new one from then on. To delete a goal and its completions, use Delete this goal on the same page.
