Check that tracking works

See your first visit in Real-time, and fix common mistakes.

After you install the script, make one test visit. It takes about one minute.

Make a test visit

  1. Open your website in a new browser tab, as a normal visitor would.
  2. In Dodolytics, open the website and click Real-time in the sidebar.
  3. Wait up to 10 seconds. The page updates by itself.
  4. You see 1 current visitor, your page in the list of recent pageviews, and your country on the map.

Real-time shows the visitors of the last 5 minutes. Your test visit stays there for 5 minutes after your last page.

You can also click Websites in the sidebar. A website with data shows the status Active.

Check the script in your browser

If no visit shows, look at the page in your browser's developer tools:

  1. On your website, right-click the page and choose Inspect (or press F12).
  2. Open the Network tab and reload the page.
  3. Type tracker in the filter box. You must see tracker.js with status 200.
  4. Then type collect. You must see one request to collect for the page load.
  • No tracker.js: the script is not on the page. Check that you published or saved the change, and clear your site's cache.
  • tracker.js is blocked or red: an ad blocker or a privacy extension can stop it. Try a private window with extensions off.
  • tracker.js loads, but there is no collect request: the data-website-id part of the script is missing or changed. Copy the script again from Settings.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong website ID. Each website has its own ID. A script copied from another website sends data to that website.
  • The script is on one page only. Put it in a shared header or template so that every page has it.
  • A cache plugin or a CDN serves an old copy of your pages. Clear the cache after you add the script.
  • You test on localhost, or you excluded your own visits. The script does not count a local address, a browser that you excluded, or an IP address in Settings › Exclude visits. See Exclude your own visits.
  • Allowed hostnames are on, and you test on another domain. With this setting on, visits from other domains (also localhost) are not counted. See Settings › Hostnames.

Your own visits are counted, the same as any other visitor's, unless you exclude them. Keep this in mind when you look at a small website's numbers.
